Hi. I’m Marie. I’m a wife, a mom, a stepmom, a step grandma, and owner of Finn – a Pitbill/Husky/Beagle that we adopted from a rescue site. I am the daughter of immigrant parents who moved to the U.S. from Ireland over 60 years ago and became citizens. Much of my family continues to reside on Ireland’s West Coast.
As an admitted introvert, writing about myself is somewhat uncomfortable, but my college-aged daughter who is helping me get this blog off the ground told me I had to do it. So, here it goes…
I studied communications in college, with a far-flung idea that some day I may write the next great American novel. Instead, I landed an internship at a Fortune 100 company writing about Human Resources programs and a 30+ year on and off career ensued. At some point, my specialty became benefit communications.
To make a long story short, I found an altruistic aspect to communicating benefits – it could help employees save money and live better if I did it right.
Fast forward to today and I’m looking at my final years of working before retirement. One thing really bugs me: the same challenges that existed when I first started writing about benefits continue today. Most people don’t know or remember what benefits are available to them or how to take maximum advantage of them. It doesn’t make sense considering how far communication channels and technology have come.
I feel like I haven’t finished the job I set out to do. So, I’m going to give it one more shot, with a blog that talks about benefits in a different way in the hopes that readers will find something of value and be able to use their benefits to save time and money, and live happier, healthier lives. Fingers crossed!
P.S. Up front and out of habit I just want to note that benefits vary by plan, employer, and state and are governed by official plan documents, as well as Federal and state regulations. While I am sharing my own personal insights on benefits and how to maximize them, if you choose to follow my lead, it’s on you. I am not legally responsible for how you use the information on my blog. Deal?
